Hawthorn Rowing Club is enthusiastic about introducing young people from the local community to Rowing!

No rowing experience is necessary; however, enthusiasm and potential and a desire to compete at regattas would be great.

HRC is dedicated to developing rowing at the grass roots level in the community.  The club does this in the following ways:

1.      GO ROWING Learn To Row Program

Become a Junior member and start learning to row straight away, or do our Go ROWING Learn To Row Program, then become a member.

The Go ROWING program consists of up to 5 Learn to Row sessions over a month. Over the summer and school holidays students can do the Intensive Go ROWING program over 5 days, Monday to Friday.  Both the monthly and intensive Go ROWING Learn To Row programs are $POA.

During the Go ROWING Learn To Row programs students will learn:

Introduction to Rowing & Sculling

  • Sculling vs Sweep rowing and coxing
  • Boats & oars
  • The rowing environment
  • Brief history of rowing
  • Rowing in Australia
  • Safety in Rowing
  • Basic rules/procedures for beginners
  • Safety position
  • Surviving capsizes
  • Equipment/rigging checks
  • Basic Rowing & Sculling Technique
  • How to get into the boat
  • Correct grip
  • Stroke sequence
  • On the water - Balancing the boat
  • On the water - Maneuvering the boat
  • On the water – essential drills/exercises

After successfully competing the HRC Learn To Row program participants will be awarded a Certificate of Attainment in Rowing.

Go ROWING Learn To Row sessions are conducted in small group sessions so we can form crews and row different boats.  Its great fun so make sure you book in early .

2.      BETTER ROWING Program – Become an HRC member allowing you access to squad training for fun, fitness and/or competition.

  • Rowing Fitness
  • Training in crews
  • Basic fault correction
  • Rigging and coxing in more detail.

3.      Excellence in Rowing

  • Master the rowing technique in a range of boat classes
  • Improve individual levels of strength, endurance, power
  • Improve knowledge, skill and personal development
  • Improve knowledge about race tactics and race preparation

HOW TO GET STARTED:

Membership and course fees are payable by cheque made out to Hawthorn Rowing Club Inc. or by cash in an envelope clearly labeled with your name/names and handed to the Head Coach, Neville Smith. A receipt will be given.

Please note additional coaching fees may apply (not including Program One - Go Rowing).

Further Information:

What to wear and bring to Go Rowing sessions: Hat/cap, sunscreen, water bottle, T-Shirt, bike shorts or shorts not too baggy, sneakers/running shoes, a woolen jumper, polar fleece or thermal long sleeve if it’s cold or raining.
