Junior Learn to Row Program at HRC
Hawthorn Rowing Club is enthusiastic about introducing young people from the local community to Rowing!
No rowing experience is necessary; however, enthusiasm and a desire to compete at regattas would be great.
HRC is dedicated to developing rowing at the grass roots level in the community, therefore anyone from any school can enroll into our program.
All new athletes must first complete a Junior Learn to Row Program
What to wear: Hat/cap, sunscreen, water bottle, T-Shirt, bike shorts or shorts not too baggy, sneakers/running shoes, a woolen jumper, polar fleece or thermal long sleeve if it’s cold or raining.
During the Junior Learn to Row Programs students will learn:
Introduction to Rowing & Sculling
Sculling vs Sweep rowing and coxing
Boats & oars
The rowing environment
Brief history of rowing
Rowing in Australia
Safety in Rowing
Basic rules/procedures for beginners
Safety position
Surviving capsizes
Equipment/rigging checks
Basic Rowing & Sculling Technique
How to get into the boat
Correct grip
Stroke sequence
On the water - Balancing the boat
On the water - Maneuvering the boat
On the water – essential drills/exercises
The Junior Learn to Row Program is 5 classes run either as a group or privately on an as needs basis. If you would like to book some sessions please contact the Hawthorn Rowing Club on learntorow@hawthornrowingclub.com or juniorrowing@hawthornrowingclub.com
*Please note: Children 12 years and under may be allowed to row at the Club Captain’s discretion – he or she will determine if the child is physically fit and mature enough to handle a boat. All children 12 and under must be accompanied by a Club official (a coach or committee member) when on or near the water. A parent or guardian of the child must be present at all times. Junior rowers are entitled to use the gym equipment, but must be supervised by an adult.
Junior Rowing Squad
After successfully competing the Junior Learn To Row Program participants will be offered a place in the Junior Rowing Squad at the Hawthorn Rowing Club. The squad training environment enables the athletes to:
Improve Rowing & General Fitness
Train and Race in crews
Correct basic faults
Learn rigging and coxing in more detail
Improve individual levels of strength, endurance and power
Improve knowledge, skill and personal development
Learn race tactics and race preparation
Training times are Tuesdays and Thursdays 4pm-6pm then Sundays 10am-12pm.
Associated Costs:
Junior Learn to Row Program $164
Junior Squad Enrolment Fee $240
Junior Squad Term Based Coaching Fee $100
